Non-Lucid Intervals

Non-Lucid Intervals represents a state of consciousness that is formed mainly through the sense of vision. The immediate visual availability of virtually anything and everything has left the sensation greedy spectator hungry for more. In the rush to take in as much as possible as fast as possible, appearances are compelled to substitute for content, thus fragmenting perception. In these circumstances life becomes dream-like and abbreviated – a montage of the real – whereby the passage of time appears as the only constant.
The artist's own photographs and found imagery are used to intuitively compose a fragmented dream-like narrative. The images represent lucid instants that are tied together through speculation. Consideration of dream symbolism is encouraged in the reading of the piece.
Non-Lucid Intervals was featured in the DIT Graduate Show in June 2011 in National Photographic Archive, Dublin. The piece was further showcased in the RDS Student Art Awards in the RDS Concert Hall in August 2011, as well as in Farmleigh Gallery, Castleknock, from August to October 2011.

The Essay
Non-Lucid Intervals represents a state of consciousness that is formed mainly through the sense of vision. The immediate visual availability of virtually anything and everything has left the ‘sensation greedy’ spectator hungry for more. In the rush to take in as much as possible as fast as possible, appearances are compelled to substitute for content, thus fragmenting perception. In these circumstances, life becomes dreamlike and abbreviated – a montage of the real – whereby the passage of time appears as the only thing constant. The visual narrative of the scroll deals with the paradoxical nature of progress, both restricted and enabled by the pressure of time. In the rush to move forward, meaning is compromised for quick visible results – lucid instants – that are tied together through speculation, rather than investigation. Similar enigmatic developments can be discerned in image and text relationships, accelerated by the growing use of visual language to connect and communicate. What the Internet has facilitated and continues to move towards is the instantaneous sharing of experiences despite physical distance. The heightened desire for speed in sharing our exchanges can only be fulfilled through images, for words necessarily slow down the consumption as well as production of information, and not least due to the lack of common spoken language between a variety of cultures. The more habitual the fast-paced information sharing becomes, the harder it appears for verbal and textual language to keep up. Text and speech, it can be argued, have increasingly been reduced to mere keywords that simply help link similar data, or they are used as prompts for complex theories and actions. Society will, however, continue to require ‘slow’ linguistic explanations for worldly phenomena, and the postmodern mentality will in turn continue to question society’s requirements. Finding the words to describe a situation essentially means finding the limits of that situation. Words cease the progress of meaning – in images the meaning lives on. While it is characteristic of the times to want to move forward and technologically evolve, demand for frameworks and restrictions appears somewhat dated. In a transition to more image-based communications, the linguistic forms of language have to transform accordingly, in order for conception to keep up. |

The Sources
Just as dreams are built up of images seen with one's own eyes or visualizations based on second hand information, both own and images sourced online or through publications were used in the construction of the narrative. Below is a list of all image sources.
